SEZ ...... CONTD.

However , after the act was passed and enforced discussions were that:-
1. is it fully correct to replace industries in place of agriculture in an agro based economy like ours where about 57% of labour force depends upon agriculture and which contributes approximately 26% of GDP and 18% of INDIA's exports?

2. is it appropriate to snatch away land from the hands of the poor farmers and hand it over to the industrialists for establishing industries and skyscrapers ?
SEZ's IN INDIA.......

In INDIA , private players have set up mostly SEZ's . according to recent estimates untill now 163 SEZ's have been approved for establishments and another 169 had been granted principal clearance by government . In INDIA two thirds of the total SEZ's has come up in states like Maharashtra , Andhra pradesh , Karnataka , Gujarat, Haryana.

IMPACT OF SEZ POLICY - AN ILLUSTRATION:-

As we all know that india iss mostly agro based economy . Therefore , in this agrarian economy converting the cultivable land into industrial areas is the main work involved under the SEZ policy . The central govt. has given the directive that the farmland should not be acquired for SEz but the state govt.s are opting the opposite path . Lakhs of people from states as far flung Haryana , Orissa and Maharashtra are engaged in a sustained agitation against the unjust acquisition of their lands for many SEZ projects .

MERITS OF SEZ:-
1 . HIGHLY DEVELOPED INFRASTRUCTURE.
2. SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF TAX EXEMPTION.
3. INCREASE IN INDUSTRIAL GROWTH.
4. CREATION OF EMPLOYMENT.
5. FACILITY OF IMPORTING RAW MATERIALS FROM FOREIGN COUNTRIES AT REASONABLE RATES.

DE-MERITS OF SEZ:-

1. NO SOURCE OF INCOME.
2. EMPLOYMENT TO LIMITED MEMBERS.
3. LIMITED EXPIRY PERIOD OF THE INDUSTRIES.
4. LACK OF FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS.
5. NO FREEDOM FOR STRIKES .
6. NO ENVIRONMENT LAWS.
7. NO TOWN PLANNING RESTRICTIONS.
8. LOWER SELLING PRICES OF THE LAND.

The apprehensions that SEZ in india may not deliver the good may be a reality in the years to come. What is needed is the amendment to the SEZ act 2005 after considering the interest of the farmers and the labor force and the overall development of the country . Chinese approach will definitely be a revelation to the policy makers in Delhi.....
